Cathedral of the Incarnation
Welcome to the
Cathedral of the Incarnation

The essence of the Cathedral of the Incarnation is not the brick and mortar out of which it is built; it is instead, the people who identify with it and who are bonded together by a common faith and a united sense of mission.

Our parish is a thriving community of more than 2,300 families representing more than 4,800 individuals in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. The average age of our members is 35 although there is a good representation of individuals in their forties and older!  In this website you will find the breath of ministries active in this dynamic parish. The diversity of our ministries and parishioners is a reflection of God’s gift of Life.

The people of Cathedral rely on one another to build our parish, but their support extends much further than our corner on West End Ave.  Cathedral parishioners are active in outreach throughout our community and beyond our borders as we strive to reflect the Gospel message that “God so loved the world.”

We welcome you to our website. We hope it allows you to gain insight into the Cathedral of the Incarnation Parish Community.

May God bless you and strengthen you in mission and service.

Fr. Edward Steiner FROM OUR PASTOR

February 5

When asked by Bishop Choby to consider moving from Immaculate Conception in Clarksville to the Cathedral, I politely expressed that I'd rather stay at Immaculate Conception. I had only been at I.C. for six years, and I had several projects I wanted to see to completion before I left.

When I arrived at Immaculate Conception, the parish was in terrible financial condition. This was for a lot of reasons. Father Eric Fowlkes, whom I followed, had been a great and much loved pastor, but he had been moved almost a year before my arrival, so it was not his fault. A year without a pastor had taken its toll. The 101st Airborne had deployed, which negatively affected the parish, the parish owed a huge amount of money, it had bought and started a school, and because of the deployment, a lot of military families had left Clarksville.

Getting the parish on solid financial footing was challenging, but within three years we had retired one of two loans, were making progress on the second, had increased attendance, collections were steadily going up, and the number of ministries were increasing. Immaculate Conception School is three and a half miles from the church, and I knew that to really make a go of it, we had to move the school to the church property. Although the school had only 150 students, Religious Education had close to 600, and we did not have nearly enough space, so I had begun the process of building an education building. What I really wanted to see finished was an education building, but it was not to be.

One of the things I expressed to Father Kibby when we began meeting about the transition of pastors is that I was happy about coming to a parish without financial problems. Fr. Kibby laughed heartily knowing that finances at Cathedral were worsening and that the debt was about to become a millstone.

What worked for me before is working again. It has been slow, but expanding ministries, increasing attendance, and doing other things are a slow way to fix a financial situation but is a way of repairing finances so history doesn't repeat. The first part is working; our operations are almost in the black. Now, therefore, we must tackle our debt of about $3.1 million. I'm thrilled that we are now in a position to start chipping away at the millstone. My goal for us is ambitious: to have retired the debt by the 100th anniversary of the Cathedral church in July of 2014. In the coming weeks, as the plan comes together, we will be announcing our strategy. Be ambitious with me! Let's knock out this debt and really do what we are capable of doing for God!

NEW SERIES
American cultures wars notwithstanding, Science and Religion coexist quite well within the Catholic Church. Speaking before the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope Benedict XVI has said "Christianity does not posit an inevitable conflict between supernatural faith and scientific progress," (2010) and science can be "a place of dialogue, a meeting between man and nature, and potentially, even between man and his Creator." (2006)

Please join us during the Sundays of February as we examine the roles of Science and Medicine and hear how faithful Catholics pursue their scientific vocations. This four week series will provide a basic orientation to current scientific and religious perspectives in preparation for a special public lecture on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 presented by Maureen Condic, PhD, on "Stem Cell Research and Ethics."

THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5:
"What is Science?" is presented by Bob Scherrer, parishioner of Assumption Church in Nashville and Chairperson of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Vanderbilt University. Dr. Scherrer writes, "I will examine the nature of science, how it works, and what it does. What are the assumptions or 'axioms' of science? How are scientific theories constructed? What areas are inside and which are outside the domain of science? Why is science so successful inside its domain of activity? Can science say anything about morality? Does it have anything to say about the existence of God?"
Child care is available for Sunday  morning classes for adults. Contact jlemaire@cathedralnashville.org or 327-2330 x309 by Friday noon providing name(s) and ages(s) of children.
